Stabbing Spree Leaves One Dead, Two Critical in Sydney

(MENAFN) A man was fatally stabbed and two others left in critical condition Tuesday after a knife-wielding attacker struck along a crowded commercial street in western Sydney, local media reported.

The assault unfolded in the suburb of Merrylands along Merrylands Road — a bustling retail corridor in New South Wales — where emergency services rushed after reports of a man stabbing multiple victims before fleeing on foot, according to media.

A male victim believed to be in his 30s or 40s died at the scene despite desperate efforts by paramedics to save him.

A 22-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman were transported to hospital in critical condition, authorities confirmed.

Investigators determined that two of the stabbings occurred inside a business premises, with a third taking place on the footpath directly outside.

Officers tracked down and arrested a male suspect behind a nearby residence on Smythe Street. He was subsequently taken to Granville Police Station for questioning.

NSW Police Superintendent Simon Glasser pointed to a troubled background, saying: "The alleged offender is known to police for petty crime and a number of mental health incidents."

A crime scene has been established as detectives work to determine the motive behind the deadly rampage. Investigations remain ongoing.
