Northern Scotland schools stay closed amid ongoing snow, ice warning
The UK’s Met Office has issued an amber warning for snow across much of northeastern and northern Scotland from 1100 to 1900 GMT, predicting accumulations of up to 15 centimeters (nearly six inches).
In response to the ongoing hazardous weather, all schools in Aberdeenshire are shut, with dozens also closed in Aberdeen. Moray has seen a significant number of school and nursery closures, while schools in Shetland and Orkney remain closed after an extra holiday day on Monday due to the conditions.
A yellow warning for snow and ice extends from Scotland’s central belt southward past the England border until 1100 GMT, covering additional areas potentially affected. Overnight temperatures reached a low of minus 11.2°C in Dalwhinnie, highlighting the severity of the freeze.
Authorities have cautioned that driving could be dangerous, with icy roads causing significant disruption. On Monday, northern train services were affected, and National Rail warned that delays and cancellations could continue until the end of Tuesday.
First Minister John Swinney stated that efforts are ongoing to maintain transportation services and keep public services operational. Meanwhile, parts of southern England may also face disruptive weather later this week as an Atlantic low-pressure system interacts with an Arctic airmass over the region.
